Test AnxietyFirst of
all, understand that having some test anxiety is normal. I’ve been a student
and now I’ve been a teacher to thousands of students…
Everyone experiences some degree of nerves over exams. You
are not alone. The morning of a big math test, believe me,
it’s Stomach Cramp City!
Being a little nervous for a test
is actually a good thing. Studies show that you’ll perform
better if you’re a bit nervous because all your senses will
be heightened. But, too many nerves can hinder your
performance.
Tips to reduce test
anxiety:
- Do enough studying and don’t
cram at the last minute.
- Don’t study or discuss the
material with other students right before the test.
Often times another student will say something to
confuse you and this will really make the tummy
squirrels kick in. If you have formulas to memorize,
just look through some flash cards right before test
time. This will help you get focused and will calm you
down. Unless you don’t know the stuff yet – then,
you’ve blown the first rule and, honestly, there’s not
much hope.
- Don’t be late for the test.
Be sure to get their a bit early so you can take some
time in your seat to do some deep breathing and calm
down before the test gets passed out.
- If you feel the nerves coming
on, close your eyes (unless you’re driving) and
visualize yourself taking the test… you’re nice and
calm and doing well.
